Black Rain begins as a standard landscape from the Southwest United States (Arizona). The landscape features a Mesa ignited by the angle of the sunrise. The Mesa shines like a jewel mounted into its setting, which, in this case is multi-faceted darkness. The contrast and compliment of light and dark is important, but, in this painting the darkness may be most important as both an imposition and an invitation. The illumination of sun serves the shadow. The sky is black and ominous. The rain is more ash than water with large pieces of char floating through the air and through the landscape depiction. At the base of the mesa and of the painting is a woodland. The colors are intended to be evocative – full of shadow, darkness – colors of mystery and intrigue. The blue and green, the blue-green and black are colors of vision and dream, of dimensions “beyond the viel”. And in the bottom left corner, down-left, the place where we might summon and traverse mystery is a shrouded path into the woodland and into the painting.
