Saw-Whet Owl

The little owl has come into me
he has stored last night’s prey in the crotch of his sapling
I have stepped into the shadows of his thicket and he has filled up my ways
and possessed me
I meet him roosting along the deer path where he is with me always
his large dark eyes opened into mine
I see out with them
It seems he sleeps and is tame during the daylight hours
and wakes keenly to the separate night
he is keen and flies in my skull
fierce and small and silent are these wings that fly through this membrane
as I do fly now
